The microphone was not correctly or properly secured to the PC. |
| 3. |
The microphone has been muted. |
| 4. |
The microphone has not been turned on in the Master Volume setting. |
| 5. |
The Microphone Boost was not turned on. |
| 6. |
The microphone is faulty. |
| 7. |
The PC is faulty in that it cannot accept microphone input. |
Conduct the following tests to determine the cause and to rectify it if possible:
| 1. Checking if the speakers are working properly. |
| |
a. |
Launch the Master Volume Control by double clicking on the Master Volume Control icon on the task bar that is located at the bottom right hand corner of the Windows:
| |

| |
Or go to the “Start” menu -> Select “All Programs” -> Select “Accessories” -> Select “Entertainment” -> Select “Volume Control”
| |
b. |
Adjust the Master Volume as shown in the diagram. You should be able to hear the “Ding Ding” sound. Make sure that the Volume is not muted.
| |

| |
If you still cannot hear any sound by adjusting the Master Volume, go to any website that you know like YouTube for example to see if you can hear any music or sound. If you can’t, then the speakers could be faulty.
2. Checking if the microphone is working properly.
| |
a. |
You MUST make sure that you have run Test (a) first to ensure that your speakers are not faulty.
| |
b. |
Make sure that the microphone is PROPERLY connected and that it is NOT connected to the hole that is meant for earpiece. If the holes on the PC are color coded, the color code for microphone should be Pink. Otherwise, look out for the microphone icon next to the hole.
| |
c. |
Make sure that the microphone is SECURELY connected to the PC. Try pressing it hard against the hole to prevent any loose connection.
| |
d. |
Make sure that your speakers are working and then try blowing into your microphone. If it is working fine, you should be able to hear some side tone noise.
| |
e. |
You may want to use another microphone to see if the original one is faulty.
| |
f. |
If there is no side tone noise, then proceed to perform some diagnostic tests on your microphone:
| |
i) |
Call out the Master Volume settings as shown in Test (a). Check if you see that there is a Microphone column as shown in the diagram on the right and that it is NOT muted.
| |

| |
ii) |
If the Microphone column is not shown on the Master Volume settings, then select “Options” -> select “Properties” -> make sure that the “Microphone” is checked.
| |

| |
iii) |
Make sure that there is an Advanced button below the Microphone column as shown in the diagram on the right. If not, select “Options” -> select “Advanced Controls”.

Click on the “Advanced Controls” and make sure that the “Microphone Boost” is checked.
| |

| |
g. |
If after performing step f, the microphone still doesn’t work, you could perform the following tests to see if the PC is not able to take in the microphone input (which means the PC needs to be sent for repair).
| |

i) |
Like in Test (a), instead of select the Volume Control from the Entertainment menu, choose instead the “Sound Recorder”.
